How to Register & Vote

Virginia tries to make voter registration forms readily available. Most state agencies, the library, the Post Office, and the DMV all have applications.

Do you need to update your registration? If you have moved, changed your name, or not voted in a number of years, please re-register. There are three ways to register:

  1. Register online: You will need to have your Virginia driver’s license and your social security number handy to submit it online.
  2. Register in person at the General Registrar’s office.
  3. Call us for a registration form, or print one out online, and either mail it to us or bring it in.

You can verify that you’re registered at the elections website.

Vote By Mail

Virginia now has a permanent absentee list. Apply once and vote by mail every time! You can apply anytime up to 11 days before an election. You can, of course, still vote by mail for just one election. Please read the form carefully, and call us if you have questions.

You can request a vote by mail application from the Registrar’s office or online. You will need to have your driver’s license handy to submit it online.

Our Main Drop Box is Located Inside the Elections Office.

You can also return your voted, mailed ballot to the drop box at any precinct on election day. All ballots must be either mailed or dropped off by Election Day. Mailed ballots must be received by noon on the third business day after the election.

Note: If you get a ballot by mail, but decide to vote in person, you must bring your ballot in with you to ensure that your vote will count.
