Healthy Parks & Healthy People

Appomattox Court House National Historical Park and six Virginia State Parks in the Central Virginia Region have created the Healthy Parks, Healthy People program for community members and park visitors.  The initiative encourages people to spend more time recreating outdoors on their public lands, to increase awareness of the national and sate parks, encourage stewardship of these special places and promote the park's importance in tourism and economic development in their communities.  

The program is a partnership of seven parks including Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, Bear Creek Lake State Park, High Bridge Trail State Park, Holliday Lake State Park, James River State Park, Sailor's Creek Battlefield Historical State Park and Twin Lakes State Park.

To Participate:

  • Visit one of the seven park's Visitor Centers and pick up a Healthy Parks Healthy People passport booklet.  These booklets contain information about the trails at the seven parks, as well as, to hold your stamps.
  • Walk one of the trails at the park and stop in the Visitor's Center to receive a stamp specific to that park in your passport booklet.
  • Visit each of the parks, walk a trail and receive a stamp to complete your booklet.
  • Mail the completed Healthy Parks Healthy People booklet to Appomattox Court House NHP, P.O. Box 218, Appomattox, Va. 24522.  Once Submitted, you will receive a commemorative patch to recognize you walked at all seven parks and you will be entered into a drawing for special prizes, including a National Park Pass and a Virginia State Parks Pass.

Come to Be Well Fitness and accomplish a total body workout within one hour! Our well-rounded fitness program offers group classes for strength, cardio, flexibility, balance, and relaxation training. 

History Trail

Appomattox Court House National Historical Park offers a 4.5 mile long wooded and scenic trail stretching from the North Carolina Monument wayside to Lee's Headquarters.  Throughout the year, various events take place on the park's trail.  If you are a trail runner, the park offers fun runs.  Distances vary but the average distance is three miles.  For more information contact the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park at 434-352-8987.

Holliday Lake State Park Trail

The park has several hiking trails, including a connector trail to the 10.2 mile Carter Taylor Multi-use Trail for hikers, bicyclists and horseback riders.  The park offers hikes in the park throughout the year.  For more information call 434-248-6308.

High Bridge Trail State Park

The High Bridge Trail is 31 miles long and ideally suited for hiking, bicycling and horseback riding.  You can access the trail at the Heights School Road just off U.S. Business 460 near Pamplin.  For more information, call 434-315-0457 or Email High Bridge Trail State Park.

Academic Cafe

Want somewhere to relax and read a book or do some research?  The Academic Cafe located in the New Geneva Leadership Academy offers relaxing areas to sit, inside and out.  Visit their book store and extensive research library.  Hi-Speed internet access is available.  The cafe also offers a snack bar as well.  Located at 222 Harrell Street, downtown Appomattox.  Open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from noon - 6 pm and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 am to 6 pm.

Boating Safety Education Classroom Course

The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries hold Boating Safety Education Courses in the surrounding area.  To fine a class that is free to the public and to register, go to the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Site and click on boating or call 800-830-2268.   

Pickleball

Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in America and now you can play here in Appomattox. It is a combination of tennis, badminton and ping pong, using an oversized paddle, a whiffle ball and played on a mini-tennis court. Games are played at the Grace Hills Baptist Church gym on Tuesdays and Thursdays. at noon. For more information please call 434-352-8847.  

The New Geneva Christian Leadership Academy

The New Geneva Christian Leadership Academy offers many extra curricula classes and various alternative educational programs for the community throughout the year.  Options include music and art programs and exhibitions, history, theology, literature, Christian economics, math tutoring and more.  Special speakers and events are periodically arranged.  Homeschooling families are encouraged and welcomed! 

Student ages range from pre-K through college level.

AJ Skateworld

AJ Skateworld is now open, they offer skating on Friday nights from 7 pm to 10 pm, Saturdays from 2 pm to 5 pm and 7 pm to 10 pm and on Sundays from 1 pm to 4 pm  Admission is $6 with $1 skate rental for each session.  AJ Skateworld offers Fund Raising events, Birthday Party Packages, Special group rates for private rental and Learn to Skate Lessons.  For more information call 434-534-7055 or 703-623-7354 or you may email AJ Skateworld.

Central Virginia Alliance For Community Living Inc. 

The Central Virginia Alliance For Community Living, Inc. is an agency that offers senior services to citizens in Appomattox County, such as, transportation and nutritious meals.  The agency has a site at the Appomattox Community Center and meet every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 am until 1 pm  For more information on this program contact Shirley Wheeler at 434-352-7820 or the Lynchburg office at 434-385-9070. 

NRA Firearm Concealed Carry Class

Hunter's Education Class (Free)

To find a Hunter's Education Course close to you, you can visit the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Site or call 888-516-0844, Monday through Friday from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm  Self-study books are available at the Appomattox County Administration Building or you can find the self-study book online at Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Site.   

Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program

This program is designed for older adults to help strengthen your muscles, improve flexibility, boost your mood and self-confidence.  Join the group at Grace Hills Family Life Center every Tuesday and Thursday at 10 am for lots of fun and exercise.
