Natural Resources

Community Development BuildingThe primary goal of the Community Development Department as it relates to natural resources is to maintain and enhance a healthful natural environment that both preserves the natural beauty and protects the ecology of Appomattox County. Currently, the County is responsible for two programmatic areas, Stormwater Management and Erosion and Sediment Control. Review the following topics to get more detailed information.

Stormwater Management Program: The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) administers permit coverage for land-disturbing activities as the Virginia Stormwater Management Permit (VSMP) Authority on behalf of Appomattox County. All projects requiring VSMP coverage are referred to DEQ and projects must obtain VSMP coverage prior to issuance of a local land disturbance permit.

Erosion and Sediment Control Program: Any land disturbing activity exceeding 5,000 square feet will require a land disturbing permit (LDP).  Land Disturbing Activity means any land change which may result in soil erosion from water or wind and the movement of sediments into state waters or onto lands in the Commonwealth, including but not limited to, clearing, grading, excavating, transporting, and filling of land, except that the term shall not include those activities which are exempted by the Code of Virginia and/or local ordinance.
