There are a variety of youth programs being offered in Appomattox County.  The programs require pre-registration for classes.  Some of the programs ask for payment ahead of time.  If you find an activity you are interest in, the link you click on will tell you where to sign up at, when, & how to pay. 

For any activities held at the Appomattox Recreation Department feel free to call Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. at 434-352-5996.

 

Art In The Park

Appomattox Court House NHP & the Appomattox 1865 Foundation will host "Art in the Park", from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 25, 2018.  Plein Air Painting: Painter Susan Book will offer plein air painting lessons at 10:00 a.m. & 1:00 p.m. to paint the McLean House, the Courthouse, or the Stage Road.  Participants can keep their painting & artwork as a souvenir for the day.  The Children's Art Station will feature coloring, sketching & acrylic & watercolor painting from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. behind the McLean House, with story time at noon.  Learn new artistic techniques & explore the stories of the McLean family & the famous 1865 surrender!  The event will be held in the historic village section of the park & it is free & open to the public.

2018 Karate Classes

Karate classes are taught at the Appomattox Community Center year round.  The class is for ages 6 & up on Wednesday evenings from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.  The instructor is Kim Magruder, Ms. Magruder is a Certified Instructor with a Second Degree Black Belt.  Fee: $25.00 per month, must be paid in advance to the Appomattox Recreation Department.  For more information call 434-352-5996.

Raider Wrestling Club

The Appomattox Raider Wrestling Club will hold off season wrestling for all ages through October.  Please reference the team Facebook page for details, www.facebook.com/RWCElite.  Registration nights for Elementary Wrestling in September will take place at our facility located at 567 Patricia Ann Ln.  The registration dates will be posted on the team's Facebook page & sent to the Times Virginian.  Registration fees for children in grades K-5 are $35 plus the USA Wrestling Membership fee ($15).  If you have any questions about Elementary Wrestling RWC please email us at appoyouthwrestling@gmail.com. 

Trail Life USA

Do you have a son who loves the outdoors?  Then Trail Life might be the program you have been looking for.  Join us for our annual Trail Life USA Open House. Saturday, September 15, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon at the Ministry Center of Liberty Baptist Church, 1709 Church St., Appomattox.  Open to all boys grade K-12.  

Trail Life USA Troop VA-1709 Leadership will be available to answer any questions you may have.  Interactive, trailmen-led displays will be set up to introduce you & your son to the program.  Refreshments will be provided! 

 Founded in 2013 as an alternative to Boy Scouts, Trail Life USA is a faith-based, outdoor adventure organization that provides youth mentorship & service opportunities, encourages civic responsibility & develops character & leadership to more than 26,000 boys in the US.  Operating from troops that are chartered through local churches, the program centers on outdoor experiences that build a young man's skills & allow him to grow on a personal level & as a role model & leader for his peers.

Cub Scouts

Boy Scouts

Pre-School Story & Craft Time

Join the Jamerson Memorial Library staff for pre-school Story & Craft Times on Wednesdays starting at 11 a.m.  A staff member will read a simple story to be followed by a craft project that reflects the story.  This is a great way to introduce your toddlers to reading & help them gain the skills they will need to enter daycare or kindergarten, teaching them the basics of sharing, socialization & setting up a love of reading & education.  Once a month we will try & host a "Mommy & Me Math Moment", as math plays a huge role in learning to read.  Be sure to follow us in the local newspapers & on our Facebook page for upcoming events like Story & Craft Time, photos of past events, or the latest announcements.

The New Geneva Christian Leadership Academy

The New Geneva Christian Leadership Academy offers many extra curricula classes & various alternative educational programs for the community throughout the year.  Options include music & art programs & exhibitions, history, theology, literature, Christian economics, math tutoring & more.  Special speakers & events are periodically arranged.  Homeschooling families are encouraged & welcomed! 

Student ages range from pre-K through college level.  Class times vary, including some after school hours.  Many high-school & college-level courses are available on-campus or live on-line.  New programs are now being formulated for the fall.

AJ Skateworld

AJ Skateworld offers skating on Friday nights from 7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m., Saturdays from 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. & 7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. & on Sundays from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.  Admission is $6.00 with $1.00 skate rental for each session.  AJ Skateworld offers Fund Raising events, Birthday Party Packages, Special group rates for private rental & Learn to Skate Lessons.  For more information call 434-534-7055 or 703-623-7354 or you can e-mail ajskateworld@gmail.com.

Tutoring Classes By Sylvan

Sylvan Learning is opening a Satellite Learning Center in Appomattox. Utilizing academic space on the campus of Appomattox Christian Academy, 1916 Redfields Road, located behind the rescue squad. Sylvan will provide instruction on Tuesday & Thursday afternoons & Saturday mornings. Led by Sylvan's licensed instructors & using our new digital learning platform with iPad technology, each student's interactive lesson keeps them engaged & focused. It also makes learning cool. All Sylvan programs are open enrollment, allowing a family to begin or end a program at any time. Competitive & assessment scholarships are available. Initial programs include: Academic Reading (2nd grade through 12th grade), Math Essentials: (2nd grade through 7th), Math Essentials for Pre-Algebra: (6th & 7th grade), Sylvan Advanced Math: (support for Algebra 1).
