The Department of Public Safety is home to the Appomattox Emergency Communications Center, a 24-hour staffed 911 dispatch center with enhanced 911 service including Phase II wireless for cell phone users. This center handles emergency and non-emergency calls for a variety of public responder agencies including the Appomattox County Sheriffs Department, the Appomattox Volunteer Fire Department, the Appomattox County Volunteer Rescue, and Pamplin Volunteer Fire & EMS, and Appomattox County Animal Control. The Appomattox County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is also located within the Public Safety building.
The Department of Public Safety is also responsible for creating and maintaining street addressing within the County.
