Appomattox County is efficiently served by highway, rail, and air transportation networks.
Highways
- Two east-west US highways serve the County. They are four-lane Route 460 in the center of the County and Route 60 along the northern tip.
- I-64 is an hour away. Both I-81 and I-85/95 are about 90 minutes away.
- At least twelve interstate and intrastate motor freight companies serve the County. Jamerson Brothers Trucking and H. H. Moore, Jr. Trucking are located in the County. All provide extensive coverage throughout the eastern United States and many areas of the Midwest and Canada.
- Several private courier services offer overnight package delivery.
Rail
- A Norfolk-Southern Railroad mainline parallels U. S. Route 460 across the center of the County. This line extends to the Port of Hampton Roads, a deep-channel, ice free port less than 200 miles to the east.
- Freight and Amtrak passenger service are available in Lynchburg, approximately 25 miles west.
Air
- The Lynchburg Regional Airport is about 23 miles west of Appomattox. This facility provides convenient and affordable service to several major hubs with an average of 24 flights departing and arriving each day.
- The airport offers two runways suitable for instrument landings, the longest 5,800 feet. Maintenance facilities and hangars (heated and unheated) are available. Tower operation is from 6:30 A.M. to midnight.
- U.S. Air serves the hub cities of Pittsburgh and Charlotte with five commuter flights daily from Lynchburg Regional, while Delta serves the hub city of Atlanta with three jet flights daily.
- Lynchburg Regional offers private, charter and freight services.
- Falwell Airport, about 20 miles west, is a general aviation facility that also offers private, charter and freight services. The hard surface runway is 2,950 feet long and has lights for night landings. The airport is attended from 8:00 A.M. to dusk daily.
- Appomattox is less than two hours from international airports in Richmond, VA; Raleigh-Durham, NC; and Greensboro, NC.
