Higher Education, Specific Offerings for Business and Industry
Some institutions offer particular value to the business and industrial community.
Central Virginia Community College (CVCC)
Appomattox is geographically located in the region that supports CVCC. A cornerstone of vocational training for the region, CVCC presents an array of technical and specialized resources for the area's workforce, including
- Diverse Occupational Technology classes
- “Customized” courses, tailored to meet employers’ needs
- Work Keys, a profiling program that helps employers define the skills required by certain jobs and then match the best employees to those jobs
- The Center for Advanced Engineering, which is located on the CVCC campus and enables students to take graduate-level engineering courses—and earn diplomas—from schools such as Virginia Tech, UVA, and Old Dominion University, and
- The Advanced Manufacturing Technology Association (AMTA, http://www.amta-rtc.org), which promotes technical training to meet the needs of local employers, and works in partnership with CVCC. AMTA's Education Center (AMTEC) functions as a satellite campus of CVCC for hands-on training classes in the most modern machine-tool equipment.
Longwood College
The Longwood College of Business and Economics was the first Virginia business school to require all freshmen to have laptop computers in order to better prepare students for using 21st century technology. In addition to this innovation, Longwood also offers these progressive programs:
- The College of Business and Economics includes required internship and participation in the Executive-in-Residence Program where students can talk with business executives about current business conditions and issues.
- In the Small Business Development Center, students work with small businesses on real problems and programs.
- Opportunities to study abroad are available.
Lynchburg College
A widely respected four-year college with a vibrant business-studies program, Lynchburg College also maintains the Walter G. Mason Center, which conducts research and analyzes economic trends in the area, and also provides workshops and customized training for area employers.
