The Appomattox County Board of Supervisors is comprised of five Appomattox County citizens, each one elected from a defined district.  Each Board member serves a 4-year term, but may be reelected indefinitely.  Each January, the Board holds an Organizational Meeting and elects from among the members a Chairman and a Vice-Chairman . 

By law, the Board of Supervisors serves as the governing body of Appomattox County.  Duties and responsibilities of the Board include:

• Adopting the County’s annual operating budget
• Making land use decisions
• Setting tax rates
• Establishing personnel, development, operational and other policies

The Board is also responsible for hiring a County Administrator to serve as its agent responsible for implementing established policies and procedures on a daily basis.  The County Administrator also serves as Clerk to the Board.

The Board also hires a County Attorney to provide legal advice and expertise to the County’s boards, departments and officials.

The Board of Supervisors meets on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month at 6:30 PM. Unless otherwise noted, all regularly scheduled meetings are held at the Appomattox Community Center, _____ Park Lane, in the Town of Appomattox.

If any meeting falls on a holiday, the meeting will be held on the following Tuesday.

All meetings are open to the public. Any citizen may request time on the agenda by calling the County Administrator’s Office at (434) 352-2637 by Noon on the Wednesday preceding the meeting. Also, if the Chairman acts, finds and declares that weather or other conditions are such that it is hazardous for members to attend the regular meeting, the meeting shall be continued to the following Tuesday of that week at 6:30 PM. and all hearings and other matters previously advertised shall be conducted at the continued meeting and no further advertisement is required. (Per authority of Section 15.2-1416 of the Code of Virginia)
